HUNTLY.

Brass Band. —Though the Huntly folks are sometimes unpleasantly alive to the fact that they have a brass band in their midst, it may not lie generally known elsewhere, and in order to afford a move concentrated proof of their existence, the members intend having a concert and ha! 1 here on the evening of the Sth November, when they will show what can bo done in a short time by constant practice, and consistent application to master the intricacies of band music nuder an efficient leader. Prince of Wales Birthday. —A committee are at work, arranging for a days' sport on the 9th November, in the way of foot-races, obstacle race, greasy-pig, etc. As a rule there is a dearth of anything like public amusement in Huntly on a holiday, most, of us being satisfied with having our fun and pleasure provided by our more enterprising neighbours. CnnßCii Service.—The Rev. Mr Maynard (Church of England) preached here last Sunday evening l in the school, the room generally used being filled t'> its utmost capacity, the Church of England services being at all times well attended, and apparently gratefully appreciated. The rev. gentleman preached au excellent i't'l'rnoi-. on " thfl forgivenness of sins." At the conclusion of the service a cmliiMiation chisi was held, it being the intention of Bishop Cuwie to hold a conlinnation service here oil Sunday evening, November 27th.

Wkhkia' Hammiouday.— In conversation with the stor.:keepei s here they siy that a day to be generally observed by the whole of the Waikato traders as closing day, and to allow the shop assistants off, would be preferable to having different days at dilferent places, and they are unanimously in favour of Saturday as beiug the best day in every respect. The action of the Cambridge tradesmen in hurriedly adopting Wednesday as their closing day is not commended, and likely to prejudice the chances of those who would prefer Saturday in getting that day chosen by tradesmen in other districts. Taking au impartial view of the question there can be no doubt as to Saturday being the best day to close at 1. p.m., having due regard to the interests of both employers ind employees. As the Hamilton shopkeepers have not as yet indicated their intentions the storeksepers down this way have respectfully petitioned the Mayor to call a meeting of both masters and assistants throughout the district to discuss the question, and, if possible, to iix a day that will m :et with general acceptance, on which to observe the 'lalt-holiday.

Ghattan Rigcs.—The G'rattan Riggs company played here last nij;ht to a rather thin house which may be accounted for by the fact that so many travelling companies having triveil us a call lately, consequently leaving us unable to b;ar the coustant drain.
