STOCK CONFERENCE.
(UY TELEGItAI'H.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Tuesday. The Australasian Stock Conference opened in the Parliamentary Buildings to-day. There were present :—Messrs Tabart (Chief Inspector of Stock in Tasmania), Park (Government Veterinary Surgeon for Tasmania), Bruce (Chief Inspector of Stock in New South Wales, Gordon (Chief Inspector of Stock in Queensland), John Roberts and Thomas Brydone (Otaeo). Sir John Hall, W. Boag (Canterbury), F. Lawry, M.H.R. (Auckland), J. D. Ritchie (Secretary ot the New Zealand Department of Agriculture), and J. McLean (Veterinary Surgeon for the New Zealand Government). Sir John Hall was elected chairman. Each colony will have three vten. The Conference arranged that the following should be the subject for disscussion : — 1. Regulations regarding the introduction nf foreign animals or foreign diseases—that is, diseases nut known in Australasia. 2, Regulations regarding the introduction of Australasian animals—(a) By sea, (b) by land. 3. Regulations regarding disease (a) scab, (b) catarrh, (c) fluke, (d) worms, (e) foot rot, (f) anthrax (e) pleuro-pneu-monia. (h) tuberculosis, (i) stringhalt, (k) coccidiuin and actinomycosis, (I) prurigo (horse mange, Queensland). 4. Rabbits pest. 5. Chilled meat trade. G. Studbook for Australasia.
Mr F. Tabart read a paper on quarantine regulations. It will be discussed when | printed. The remainder of the sitting was devoted to considering regulations for tho importation of stock into the colonies. At 5 p.m., the Conference adjourned till the following day. Last Night, At the Conference to day, a long discussion took place on the question of declaring New Zealand a clean colony. Mr Brydon gave notice of motion that after the next shearing of flocks in last infected district, if on inspection such flocks be free from Bcab, that the Conference recommends the Various Australian Governments to remove restrictions and that intercolonial steamers carrying sheep shall not be liable to be inspected. Various diseases affecting live stock were considered by the Conference, and a large amount of information as to prevalent diseases wa* given by the delegates. The Conference unanimously recommended that an efficient staff of inspectors be maintained in each colony. It was also resolved that a laboratory for the purpose of investigating diseases in sheep, cattle, horses etc., be established.
