DROWNING ACCIDENT.

News was receiwd here on Saturday night of the drowning of a woman and four children at Mannaoai on th=j Wairoa river, 1.0 miles from 1) nvavillo. It appears that on Friday afternoon a woman named Coldsb iro. wife of a gumdigger and her four children between the ages of 12 and 7, were, crossing the creek on a tree bridge which owing to the spring tides had been loosened, canted and threw all int > the water. A child three years old only witnessed the accident. The father and eldest bjy who were in Dargaville selling gum came home early on Saturday morning and the child told them that their mother was under the logs. The father informed Messrs P. White and Ba-c-mlje, who immediately gave assistance. They soon discoved the mother and got her ashore. The father with his other three children came into Dirgaville and informed the police, who went up the river on Sunday mornine to recover the bodies. Meanwhile Messrs White and Bjscombe hid found the hodies and had just succeeded in getting the last ashore on the arrival of the police. The five bodies were put in a boat and brought to Dargaville to await the inquest.
