LAND SEITTLEMENT IN THE RAGLAN DISTRICT.
We know ot tfW district') fiiir. have, within tliu past few years, •nado such rapid strides in the direction of permanent hind settlement as that of Raglan. The vahio of its extensive and fertile bush land.", which are obtainable at low rates for cash, or under the various tenures offered by the Crown to bomi fide settlers, are beoomiug more eenernlly recoenised. Largo ureas ot virgin forest, have been cleared and grassed by settlers, without counting the extensive reclamation works carried out on the To Akau estate, and tho result, in the shape of rich pasturage, has fully justified the labour and expense incurred. Iu addition to numerous cewoomers, the sons of old settlers have taken up sections, and these being-, of course, thoroughly accustomed to country life and bushwork, rank among tho best settlers. The marked advance in tho value of cattle, a class of stock that can bo reared to perfection in new bush districts, has also afforded considerable encouragement to those going out upon the land. While on cho subject we may mention that high-class farming is, iu some instances being profitably carried out iu this district. Mr W. Thompson's farm at Ruapuke is an example. Upon this estate, which is situated near tho sea coast, and comprises a thousand acres of land, some 200aor<;s of turnips have been grown this season. This crop has fed 2000 sheep and 200 head of cattle, many of the former being sent fat to tho Auek land market, We understand that this Win is ono of the bnst managed in the district, aud we hope is equally profitable tc ; ts enterprising owner.
