HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

A SPECIAL meeting of the above Council w»i held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. There were presort: His Worship the Mayor (Mr I. Co it;-), in the chair, and Crs. Tippen, Wood, Keid, 8011, and Sandes. The special business was to receive the balance-sheet for iho year ending 31st March, 1892, which was forwarded by the Auditor-General duly certdied as correct. The balance-sheet was read and signed by the Mayor, an 1 the Clerk was instructed to have it print'il. OKDIXAKY MEETING. The ordidary business of the Council was) then proceeded with. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Raid, Tippeti, | Wood, H. M. Salmon, Sandes, 1). Salmon. Scott, and Slade. TRANSFER.—The Public Trustee wrote, asking the Council to accent Mr C. Harwoo3, of Hamilton, in place of W. B : jVIcPherson (decease 1), as lessen of Lot 455 for remainder of the term on payment by huri of arrears of rent.—The Council decided to comply witli the request. Ban'!' Instruments.—Mr James Drnry, as secretary pro ten. of the Hamilt uLight Infantry Band, askoil for the use of the public instruments not being used by the Hamilton Bind. —The Clerk was instructed to write and ask the secretary of the latter Band what instruments they are not using, and enclosing a copy of Mr Drnry's letter. Furze. —Mi John Murphy draw attention to the extension <>t the furze in Hamilton East, which is a constant, danger to many houses. The absentees' acres, ho understood, were the worsf, and on many the furze was so thick that the value of t'i9 property would not pay for having it eradicated. He also referred to the encroachment of furze from there on to adjoining sections, ho being a sufferer, and he asked the Council to con•sider whether the time had not arrived to compel land-owners in the borough to clear furze on their property —The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr W. Aitken (Auckland), and Mrs Lastick (N.S.W.), calling attention to the danger to the adjoining property from the furzo on their properties. Roads.— Mr B. Murray called attention to a road past his place which is in a bad state for want of gravel. Ten months ago on a similar application the matter was referred to the foreman of works, but the work had not yet been done. —The matter was referred to the foreman of works to do what is required.—Mr T. Cassidy pointod out the bid swti of Wellington-street, which is the only access .he has to his slaughter-house, and asked that the road be made fit for wheeled traffic.—The matter was referred to the for.-jirian of works with power to act nt once, and that the necessary repairs be effected on this road from the corn o !' of Grey-street. Bridge Street. —Mr W. M. Hay, in writing as to the difficulty in preparing a lease for Mr Slade for Lot 411, pointed out that Bridge-street, Hamilton East,, was not a street, never having been dedicated, the street being portion of an endowment vested in the Borough in aid of the Borough funds. The other street running from the end of the Bridge parallel to the river is also in the same position.—Cr. Scott moved that the Town Cleric be instructed to examine the plan in the Auckland Office as to whether Bridge-street exists and report to the Council.—Seconded by Cr. Tippin and carried. Advertising Boards.—Permission was granted to Mr Sandes to erect two advertising boards at the ends of the Traffic Bridge to advertise H.M.S. Pinafore, on payment of a charge of sixpence, Reports.—The Foreman of Works reported that daring the month the following work had been carried out:—The edges taken off the Frankton road ; new wood culvnrt placed in front of the Parsonage, Victoria-street; new culvert and gravel at Mr Monckmann's ; Gallowav-street gravelled ; Grey-street, Hamilton East, repaired ; Hood, Victoria, and London-Streets, West, repaired; waver-tibles in Victoria-street cleared out; repairs to the County brilge and numerous other small works. Ten chains cf Albert-street, East, reqniro making up and gravelling.—The report was received and adopted.—The pound keeper reported that during tho month 20 head of cattle and 1 horse were impounded and £2 lis received in ffios.—'The report was received. Half Holiday, —a requisition was presented bv Cr. Sandes signed by 51 burgesses and residents in the borough, asking the Mayor to proclaim a public half-holiday on Saturday 13th inst. from 2 p.m. to (i p.m., on the occasion of the Anckland-Waikato football match.—The request was granted. Accounts. —Payment of the following accounts was authorisedW. Taylor, 8s (id; Ridler. 16s; Wingate and Co., £2Ss; W. De.v, ss; S. Foulsham, 4s (id; W. lOslly, 2s (id ; T. Winter, 10s 6i ; G. Mayes, £1 16s; T. Jones, £14 5s 4d; T. VV. Maunder, £3 14s ; D. Elliott, 5s 6d. Strong Room.—The following tenders were received for budding a strong room at the Council Chambers:—'!. Steadman, £31 7s; W. Cannt'li, £29 17s b'd ; Wrigley and Withy. £44 10-; T. Chappell, £27. — Mr Chappell's tfiid>»r was accepted. Lead Gutter.—T'ie Mayor stated that considerable damigi hid been done bv leakage in the gutters to tho office papers, and he had called for tenders for putting in a lead gutter. T.vo wen received, viz., W. Taylor, £5 7s (id ; J. Hammond, £8 10s. The accepting of the tenders was left in the hands of tho Mayor with power to act. Aiißkaks Ol'' K atks.—'The clerk reported that up to the eod of 1891 £73 5s 3d had accrued as arrears of rates which were unrecoverable. Since then £fi odd has accrued on the s ime properties, Cr. Leave OP Ahsknce.— Leave of absence was gr lilted to the Town Clerk to attend the Supreme Court, at Auckland. Secondary Education Reserve.—The Mayor pointed out tluit this reserve wis at present only a sepd bed for furze and briars which are spreading therefrom on to the adjoining properties an l roads. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Commissioners as to thestite of this reserve and suggesting that they have it cut up into sections of 20 or 30 acres each for leaso. Hawkers Act'.—Cr. Sandes moved that the Clerk write to Mr K. Lake. M.H. ft., requesting hiin to object to Mr Seddnn's proposed Hawkers and Pedlars Act on the grounds that it is centralising and deprives country Boroughs and Countv Councils, etc., of a source of revenue.—Seconded by Cr. Tippen and carried. This was all the business.
