POLITICAL NOTES.
(fly TELEGRAPH — .SI'KCI.U, UOUHKHI'ONDKNT.) Wkm.inhton, Lint Night. TARANAKI IRONSAXD. The indeftitiunhlu member for iVew Plymonth (Mr K. M. Smith) is highly pluas-ed with the result of tlie analysis made by Sir .Fas. Hector on tho rumples of pig and bariron made at tho Onolinnga ironworks from Tnranaki ironsand. Sir Jame* testifies that it is clearly a good piu' iron ; that it i.s very fine in the grain and perfectly malleable. Mr Smith was to-day busily engaged in exhibiting several bars nf iron in the lobbies. Hn has repeat-.dly :-tut'!il th:it if ho can only get the Government to assist the industry, there is enough mim'ral wealth in the Tar'anaki district to payoff the national debt of New Zealand. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE. Mr SandfiM-ii, the member for Christchurch, who, I understand, U a compositor in the Lyttelton Times office, naturally takes a great inti-rest in the Government printing-office, and hn intends to move for a select committ'H " to inquire into and report as to tin-, buildings, management, and working of tlie oltice, and to make such suggestions as may appear desirable in the interests of the nepartment and colony," tho committee to consist of Messrs Fisher, H'lgg, Carncrws, \V. Hutchinson, Tanner and the mi>\> r. VTLLAGE SETTLEMENTS. Mr Robert Thompson, the member for Marsden, spnka strongly against his political jhii'f.l pet Village Settlement scheme during the financial debate. Mr Thompson says that you will nowhere find a more discontented, miserable unhappy lot of people than the village settlers. They are discontented with their whole surroundings, but give them a right to acquire the freehold of their holdings and then he believes the discord in their minds will be changed into harmony. It may to mentioned that Mr Thompson although he was a strong supporter of Sir Harry , Atkinson is now a warm adherent of the Ballance Ministry except on the freehold question, and he has more than onco expressed his opinion pretty freely on that point in strong opposition t'i the views of the present Premier and Minister for Lands.
