WAIKATO HUNT CLUB.
The usual weekly meet of Mr H. BullockWebster's hounds took place at Broadmeadows, Hautapu, on Thursday last. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, nearly a hundred being out during the afternoon ; in fact it has hardly been equalled in Waiicato during the present season, and reminded us very much of the old times, when the Pakuranga hounds paid us short visits. Besides those on horseback, several turned out in buggies, &c. Among the ladies we noticed Mrs J. Maityn on a bav. Mrs Pickering on a chestnut, Mrs 75. Pilling on a brown, Miss Main on Nelson, Miss K. Main on a roan, Miss A. Sandos on a bay, Miss Hume on a brown, Miss L. Walker on a bay, Miss K.. Selby on a grey, Miss Moon on a chestnut, &c. Prominent among the gentlemen were the master (Mr M. Bullock-Webster) od Ledbury, Messrs W. M. Douglas on Pawa, Cussen on Commissioner, W. .Thornton on .Tangier, C. Lake t.n Pirate, A. Bach on an Ariel, J. S. Buck land on a Cap-a-pie, L. Souter on MuscatiUe. Wrigley on a bay, A. J. Storey on Jim, M. H. Pickering on an In«omai\ V\ , Windsor on Mistake, jv. Rathborne on Master, W. Park on Wairiri, W T Carr on Neckor-Nothing, H. Uark on'a black, E. Pilling on a brown, R. Hann»n on Duchess, Wyatt on a bay, C. Weal on Onslow, H. Weal on Nithmount, P. Emerson on Jumbo, C. Craig on Othello, Gr. Dickenson on a bay. F. Ariner on Nancy, Speake on a brown, Heaslip on Security, F. Crosby on Deceiver, R. Dodd ■ on au Ineomar, and others. After full | justice bad been dons to an excellent luncheon, provided by Mrs Martyn. and to whose kind hospitality the thanks of those present are due, a move was made by an enthusiastic crowd to a paddock at the back of the house, where a hare was soon found, but alter a short run was lost in a large ploughed paddock, the dogs being unable to keep on the scent, which we may mention was very bad throughout tho day, nwing to the dry state of the ground and the strong wind which was blowing, and this grently marred the sport. Auother hare was shortlv after picked up in a gully ill the next pa l lock, which afforded an excellent run into a paddock belonging to Mr Selby, but owing to a wire fonce the huntsmen were unable to follow, and a detour had to be made round the road to get to the.dogs, A.move Was now made on to Norrish's farm, where a very serious accident happened. The racehorse, Security, the property of Mr John Livingstone, of Hamilton, in negotiating a stiff post-and-Mil fence off the road, opposite Norrish s house fell and broke bis neck. His rider, Heaslip, however, luckily escaped without serious injury. A hare was found in a paddock at the. back of the house, which took thf hounds along through Dvkos paddocks into a ploughed paddock belonging to Mr Douglas in front of Mr Pickerings house, but owing to the bad scent was again lost. Several others were found in the gully, but were continually getting away. The hares about this part aru very numerous and strong runners, and generally manage to escape. 1 hiis no kills were recorded throughout the day, The party then proceeded across tho gully, on to Mr Douglas'home property, where a drag was laid by Messrs H. Wyatt and A. J. Storey in the direction of Mr R. Cowley's, and finished opposition Mr Burn's house. This proved both long and interesting, the country negotiated being well calculated to try tho mettle and stamina of both horses and riders, and supplied jumping enough for the most ardent of sportsmen. This bringing to a close one of the most enjoyable days of the whole season, everyone returned to their homes well pleased with their outing. Several spills occuried during the afternoon, but except in tho case mentioned above none were of a serious nature. The jumping throughout was excellent, and furnished another pioof—if that was wanting—of the great improvementin the jumping horses in Waiknto. The hounds will meet at Ohauno on Thursday next, when a drag will be laid in the direction of Hamilton. At a meeting of members at Ohaupo on Tuesday last, it was decided to hold a race meeting atClaudelands, Hamilton, 011 the Sth of October, when the following programme will be gone through : —Handicap Maiden Plade (open), of l.jsovs ; Handicap Hurdles, of 20sovs; Ladies' Braclet,_of 15 sovs ; Hunt Club Steeplechase, of Snsovs ; Farmers Plate,of ISjovs ;Tally-Ho Steeplechase, of 20SOV.S ; and Flyine Stakes (open), of 20sovs. The Fanners' Plate this year will be once round the Steeplechase course.
