WELLINGTON NEWS.

Therb are now indications that the weather will be generally fine, but cold until about the 7th inst,, and after that time there will be strong westerly gales over most parts of the Colony southward of New Plymouth and Napier. The rain fall registered by instruments at the observatory for 24 days of last month pive a down pour of nearly six inches, the heaviest record in any 24 hours of that period being that cif 4th June when nearly an inch fell. The police made a raid on some hotels last night with the result that charges of Sunday trading will be laid against five licensees. In one case the occupants were found playing cards. The labour bureau found employment for 70 men during the past week, A petition against the Compensation to Publican's Bill is being taken round for signature. The opponents say tho bill has heen sprung upon the public suddenly without allowing time for the country to express itaelf respecting it, und they claim that the Victorian cxperinient pleases neither the public nor publicans', and that its repeal is being agitated.
