FOOTBALL.

PATERANGI V. "WHATAWHATA. Notwithstanding' the heavy and continuous downpour of rain on Saturday last, the Whatawhata team, much to the surprise of the Paterangi men, put in an appearance at Paterangi at about 2 o'clock. Not a Paterangi player was on the ground, and small blame to them. However, principally owing to the energy of Mr W. Macky, ten players were eventually scraped together; with which number they eventually determined to try conclusions with their opponents. The ball was kicked off at about 3.30 o'clock, the captains agreeing to play two spells of thirty minutes each. As there was no reporter present very little can be said of the individual play. The Whatawhata men, of course, were far too heavy for Paterangi in the scrummages, but in the open play Paterangi carried the ball time •after time up to their opponents' goal line, and but for the greasy state of the ball must have scored a great deal oftener than they did. The game resulted in ft win for Paterangi by four points (two tries) to nil, the tries being obtained by Messrs W. Macky and E. Aubin. The Whatawhata forwards played a good game,' but their backs were poor. Paterangi showed great improvement on their old form. It would be invidious to particularise when all played so well.

HAMILTON V. "WHAWIIAKIA,

The match between these two clubs was played at Ngarnawahia on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Hamilton by 35 points to nil. The following composed the teams : —Hamilton : Full-back—R. Gillett; threequarters—G. W, Mayes and J. H. Hume ; halves—W. Hammond (captain) and J. Barton ; forwards —W. Cogan, A. Cassidy, J. Gillett, K. Harrison, C. G. Knox, W, Moore, F. R. Seddon and E. Paki, Ranana, Rawiri, and Toka. _ The game was played during very unpropitious weather, rain falling nearly all the time. Owing to otir reporter having to fill up a gap, we are unable to give a detailed report of the match, which was very one-sided, Whawhakia being on the defensive all the time. Tries were obtained for Hamilton by Seddon (2), J. Gillett (2), Cogan (2), Mayes (2), Harrison, Moore, and Knox one each. Hammond potted a goal from the field, and converted two tries into goals, and Peacock converted one try, making a total of 35 points to nil. The Whawhakia team are to be complimented for the manner in which they took their defeat. This is only their second game, as the members of their club are scattered, and they only play together when a match takes place. They showed a marked improvement on their form against Huntly, and should prove victorious when they meet Whatawhata next Saturday. Mr'Reid Barton acted as referae, and the captains of the respective teams as umpires.

Paterangi are to play Huntly at Hamilton next Saturday. The following players will represent Paterangi:—Full-back—W. Goble; threequartera—S. Reid, G. Cruickghank and C. The match against Whawhakia on Saturday finished Hamilton's first round. This club has played four matches—won three and drawn one, scoring 84 points to 4 against. Tho following will represent the Whawhakia Football Club in their match with Whatawhata at Ngaruawahia on Saturday next:—H. Marshall, W. Himionn, B. Marshall, N'Taiawa, K. Takore, W. Pakl, P. Puni.
