POLITICAL NOTES.
(by telegraph.—special correspondent, Wellington, Last Night. OPPOSITION MEETING.
A CAUCUS of the Opposition party was held this morning. The Hon. W. Rolleston presided. The situation was generally discussed, all the party present in Wellington being represented. It was shown that the party were firmly united, with no dissension m the ranks. The only determination arrived at was that in the interests of the colony it was desirable the Address-in-Reply should be debater! fairly. This was not resolved upon without discussion, several members being disposed not to debate the Address. Mr Rolleston was, however, earnestly bent upon the discussion, and his advice was followed by the party. The debate on the Address-in-Reply commenced this afternoon, and it is almost certain to go into next week. HON. J. BRYCE'S PETITION. Mr Hutchison consented to waive his motion that Mr Bryce be heard at the bar of the House in favour of a motion by Mr McGuire to the effect that the vote of censure passed on Mr Bryce last session be rescinded unconditionally. Mr Bryce has agreed to accept this. The Premier also consented, provided the motion was taken without debate. When this motion was culled on this afternoon, Mr Ballance moved its postponement till after the Address-in-Reply had been disposed of, to which Mr Hutchison consented, although with reluctance. HON. J. B. WHYTE IN THE COUNCIL. This afternoon Mr Whyte said members of the Council were aware that a series of serious charges had been preferred against him, although he was innocent of them, yet while they were pending he did not intend till they had been disproved of to take any part in the proceedings of Council, he had taken his aeat to-day as a matter of right and having said so much should retiro. NATIVE LAND LEGISLATION. Mr Cadroan intends to introduce a Bill to enable a broader area of land to be acquired along the North Island Trunk Railway. and to maintain restriction on sale of land in the King Country for another year. Private purchase legitimately commenced will be excluded from the operation of the measure.
