KANAKA LABOUR
(UY KLECTKIO TKMMJRAPH.—COPYMOHT). Loernox, June 7. Sru Arthur Gordon' in a. letter to the Times, insists that disaster will result from draining the Pacific Islands of adult men. It will bo a reproach to England if she permits the policy that will sweep out the population from the whole expanse of the Pacific. If New Guinea is opened to the labour traffic it will be necessary to constitute a Government there independent of Queensland. Tt is impossible to disassociate the labour tvallic in the past from certain abuses, but on the other hand, Sir Arthur considers it gross exaggeration to term the system slavery, yet the danger and the probability of abuses arising again is enormous, for, desi.it') every effort, illegal tilings were done in recruiting labour for Fiji. Ho doubts if public opinion in Qie'ensland will sanction the stringent enforcement of the regulations, and advises the importation of Indian coolie labour.
