Issuing Yai.uei.kss Cheques.— A man named James McAllister of Whatawhata was arrested at Ngaruawahia on Thursday last by Const. Cavanagh (instructed by Const. White from here), on a charge of issuing valueless cheques. It appears on the 30th May, he gave Mr Harris, of the Huntly Hotel, a cheque for £1, m payment for drinks, who cashed it and gave him the change. This cheque was returned to MiHarris by the Bank authorities, together with the notification "No account, refer to drawer." Tlio accused had in the meantime given Mr Sinimelhag, of the Delta Hotel, Ngaruawahia, another cheque for £2, which had likewise been cashed for him, this was also dishonoured on presentation, and marked "N.S.F. ' He was brought before Mr R. Ralph, J.F., on Friday morning, but was remanded until the 10th, when it is probable further charges of a like nature will be preferred against him. Accidental Fund.—A sum of £30 having he-Mi left over from the Sick and Accident Fund, of the Taupiri Extended Company's employees, at the time of the for- ■ mat'ion of the present Association, which is formed in each mining district under a regulation of the present Coal Mines Act, a meeting was held last week to determine what should bo done with this sum. ]n the past it has b'en annually distributed among the men in proportion to the amount paid in, but on this occasion it was paid paid over to the promoters of a bra-s baud, which loudly proclaims its existence among the employees of the Company. Soma of the men thought it should have been disposed of as usual, and they they would have been at liberty to have, personally donated it towards assisting the band, if «o inclined.
