FOOTBALL.
HAMILTON V. I'ATEIIANGI. The first match of the fixtures made by the Waikato Rugby Union, Hamilton v. Patsrangi was played on Sydney Square, on Saturday, resulting in a victory for the former by 12 points to 2. From the scores one may imagine that it was rather :t onesided affair, but this was by ni. mentis the ca-e ; and a belter or faster game has not been witnessed in Hamilton for many a day. Tho followingrepr'sented the Hamilton team Full-back, W. Brown ; threequarters, W. Hammond, J. Reid ; halves, Hume, Gillett, N. Irwin : forwards, Harrison, Peacock, Gillett, Williamson, Parr, Moore, Jolly, Cassidy, Clarkin. The Paterangi team was composed ofFullback, Goble ; three-quarters. Marshall, Ryburn and Reid; halves, Berry. Bowden and Kusabs; forwards, Aubin, Ryburn, Macky, Kusabs, Crnickslnnk, Walker, Livingston and Norrish. Messrs Bowden and McKenzie umpired for Paterangi and Hamilton respectively, and Mr W. J. Gribtle ably filled the position of referee. Paterangi kicked off, and Hume returned, sending the ball out ot bounds in Paterangi's ground; Kusabs then carried it back to mid-field where he was collared by Hume, the leather going out at tho 50 flag. From the throw in, the Hamilton forwards got a fast rush on, and the visitors were compelled to save. Paterangi kicked out and Hume, getting hold, made a splendid run, taking the play alongside the blue and white's line, and they had to force for the second time. Moore was next to show op, he ran and passed to Hammond, who punted. Marshall returned, and through Irwin holding ton long, Paterangi were awarded a free kick. From a serum in mid-tield, the Hamilton forwards went through into their opponent's 25, where Clarkin passed to Hammond, who potted, but failed to scorj. Paterangi again kicked out, Clariun returning, and by following up, the Hamilton forwards came through and Clarkin got across, scoring the first try for Hamilton, Hammond took the kick and landed a neat goal. Paterangi being offside at the kick off, a scrum was formed in the centre of the ground; Gillett hroke through with the ball at his feet, and got over at the extreme corner of the ground, the referee giving it as touch-in-goal. Hume secured the oval near the half-way flag, and after running, passed to Moore, who carried it up to the line; Peacock then drove it over, and Patprangi forced. Ryburn kicked out, and Walker, by a grand piece of foot work got right up to the Hamilton line, and Aubiu dashed across, getting the only try for Paterangi; the kick at f,oal was a very difficult one, and Marshall failed to convert. Shortly after, half-time was called, the scores being Hamilton 5, Paterangi. 2. Hamilton kicked off, Reid returning the ball to mid-Held, Home now ran ami tried to score, but was collared by Knsab's just inside the line. Some very fast work took place in the Paterangi territory, till with a sweeping rush, the visitors took the ball clean over the Hamilton goal line, Brown forcing. Play was then stationed at mid-tield for a time, whan 1 [nine, carried the leather up to the Paterangi 25 flag, near which numerous scrums t ink place, neither side seeming to have tho advantage, till Clarkin shot out from the van and scored the second try for Hamilton, Hammond took the kick at goal_, but did nut increase the score. From this nut the ball remained in Paterangi's ground, many scrums being held; Parr was fiivjt to show out with the ball at his feet, scoring third try for Hamilton from which Hammond landed a good goal. Directly afterwards time was called, the scores being, Hamilton 12 points (two goals and one try), Paterangi 2. For the Hamilton team Gillett, Peacock and Parr were mr.st conspicuous among tho forwards, while Hume and Brown shone most behind the scrum. Walker, Crnickshank and Aubin played best for Paterangi in the forward division. Kusabs, Bowden aud Ryburn doing most work as backs. HAMILTON EAST SCHOOL V. NGARUA"WAHIA scnooL. The Hamilton East schoolboys went as far as Ngaruawahia last Saturday to play the schoolboys of that place. The match resulted in a draw, each side scoring 7 points (a goal and a try). T. Winter secured both tries for Hamilton, one of which C. Logie converted ; but the names of the Ngaruawahia scorers have not come to hand. HU.VTLY V. WIIAT Aw HAT A. The football match on Saturday proved another victory for Huntly, who scored 10 p >ints (5 tries) to their opponents' nil. At the end of the first spell the score stood, Huntly, 2 ; Whitawhata, 0 ; and when the latter team relinquished the game, Huntly's scu-e hail been increased by 8 points. The tries were obfained by J. B. Harris, S. Harris, Cnnnully, C. Smith. The visit >rs, who hail come up from Tnakau on Saturday morning, having defeated the Kohanga Club there, were entainod at a smoke concert in the evenine, and were much gratified at the treatment they received at Huntly, some of them declaring that at Hamilton and elsewhere at the conclusion of the game, they had b-eu left on the field, or coolly allowed to make their humble departure.
