ROTORUA.
• A Maori Wedding.—lt is seldom that a i Maori wedding is of such interest as to at- , tract the attention of a newspaper correspondent. ■ Still the celebration of one of those happy events in which the contracting parties are natives caused no little excitement here on Monday last, when Miss Raiir.apahu and Mr Rawhara were united in the happy bends of wedlock. The ceremony was performed by Father Hollierhoclc in the Church of St, Michael and in the presence of a larf,e gathering of Maoris and Europeans. A sumptuous repast was provided in the Tamatekapua Meeting House in honour of the event to which a general invitation was given to all the residents, and was freely taken advantage of, ample justice being done to the viands both liquid and solid. In the evening again, a dance was given inthePnkekawaHa.ll which was tastefully decorated for the occasion, thu3 bringing to a close a round of festivities that proved interesting and entertaining and highly acceptable at this session of year as things in general are decidedly quiet. Change of Vocation—Captain Gilmer of the steam launch, Alice, who has been here during the past twelve months in command of the little craft, which has had a fairly successful season in conveying tourists around the lake, leaves on Friday enroute for Auckland to enter the employ of the Northern Steamship Company as head cletk in one of their offices, a position which he is well able to fill, having been for many years in a similar capacity in Hunter and Nolan's office, Auckland. The genial skipper has made a bout of friend* duriughis only too brief sojourn here Although Capt. Gilmer is retiring from a seafaring life, or rather in this instance from the lake, we trust his future career ashore will be accompanied by that wave of prosperity which frequently follows the lot of the sue cessful and experienced mariner afloat. A smoke conceit will bo accorded to Captain Gilmer as a send off on the eve of his departure.
