THE PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY AT OHAUPO.

9 TO THE EDITOR. Sin, —There are some obstacles in the way which the county engineer seems to have overlooked when planning for a public water supply at Ohaupo. (1) The building of a dam is, in my opinioo, a very objectionable part of the scheme. A dam on the site proposed would be a constant menace to the compound bridges below, and I don'o think that our railway authorities will allow it to be done ; (2) it would absorb the fall required for the proper drainage of a considerable area of partly reclaimed swamp between the proposed dam and the Ohaupo railway station —an inju&tico which the owners will not allow if they can prevent it; (3) the county engineer is under a mistake as to the ownership of the land he wants for building the dam. The writer is the owner, and not Mr McNicol, as reunited. The railway is tho boundary of that gentleman's property, and divides his property and mine ; (4) the scheme is a very expensive one, and far more than such impure water is worth. It is not fit for domestic use, either in the laundry or kitchen, nor will animals drink it unless they are very thirsty, or stock which have been forced to drink it when young. It is not suitable for milking cows, as the milk would be unfit for butter or cheese-making. The whole scheme reminde me of the quaker's horse, which had only two faults: First, it was hard to catch, and secondly, it was no good when it was caught. This is the candid opinion of—Yours truly.
