MR FAWKES' QUESTION.

10 THK EDITOR. Sir,—The question put forward by Mr Fawkes, at the late meeting of Newcastle ratepayers, admirably illustrates the noble idea,3 and motives, which evidently underlie the actions of the "Great Liberal Party." The members of this patriotic band appiirtently judge their eneu.ies by their own standard. And what a standard. All the evils of conservatism— and they were numerous enough—perpetrated and repeated, only on a more paltry and con-t-Miiptiblo sciile. No, deur Mr Fawkes. There is no truth in the startling rumour which has reached your oars, probably through that "libenj" channel, the key hole. Further, there is no occasion for soch a step. All that those treasonable persons, which you are pleased to term the National Tory Association need do, is simply to allow the " Liberals " sufficient rope to show their true ideas and intentions. This is being done, and already it is considered as very remarkable, how close an analogy exists between the meaning of the words "Liberal" and "Self," as they are interpreted by the great unwashed (the latter is no mere figure of speech). Finally, as if to add tho requisite humour to the point, the problem is put forward by a gentleman, to whom even his greatest detractors could scarcely—unless they were quite dead to a sense of justice—apply the term of Liberal, at least as it is generally understood in everyday life.—l am, etc. Tory.
