ROTORUA.

The Nativbs.—'The Arawa tribe intend to muster strongly to-day at a gathering of the clans to be held at Morea settlement, when a despatch from Her Majesty Queen Victoria will be upeued and read. The document is in answer to a petition sent some time ago by the natives hero. There will no doubt be a lot of talk over thn contents of the communication from Home. The burning question, however, amongst a section of the Arawa natives at present is the dog tax, on account of which some of the leading chiefs have puttered imprisonment, ar.d their cry now is : " Pay no dog tax, but fill the gaols so that there will be no room for others, and the Government will then be in a fix." Mabiiiage.—Mr Dansey, the registrar of marriages, had the honour last week, for the first time, of officiating in his official capacity at the altar of Hymen, when a young conple (the bridegroom hailing from the neighbourhood of Ohaupo) were united in the happy bonds of wedlock. All ceremony in the rice and slipper line were dispensed with, as very few knew anything about the event until a day or two after it was over. As the young man is not a bad sort of a Chap(man), I offer him and his better half my congratulations for their future happiness. Sulphuh.— Mr T. W. Kempthome (of the firm of Kempthome, Prosser and Co.), who has been here during the past few days, has purchased Mr J. H. Taylor's interest in the sulphur deposits known as "Sod Din and Gomorrah," which aro now held by Messrs C. Hawkes Wilson and Koinpthorne. These gentlemen intend at once to erect refining works capable of turning out from 20 to 30 tons per month of pure sulphur. The business will be carried on under, the title of C. Hawkes Wilson and Co. Business Changes.—Our local knight of the anvil (Mr Loriean) has sold out his business to Mr A. McLeod, who will carry it on in future in conjunction with that of wheelwright and coach-builder.—The shop formerly in the occupation of Mr Curry, butcher, has been let to Mr Jas. Andrews, who will open it shortly as a fruit shop, &c.
