RAGLAN.
Fu.vkuat..—The remains of the poor girl, the. daughter of Mr Bregman, of Te Mata, who succumbed to the injuries received, as already recorded in a previous issue, were interred in the cemetery, adjoining the Wesleyan Church. Oketa, on Tuesday, the 12th inst. Great sympathy has been expressed for the bereaved parents. In his sermon on Sunday evening last in the Wesleyan Church, the Rev. Mr dittos feelingly referred to the sad event. Church Service.—The Rev, W. Gittos, who is on a visit to these parts, held divine service at Kopua on Sunday morning last with the Maoris who reside there, a large congregation being present, there being a largo number of natives visiting their friends there just now. The evening service was conducted by the rev. gentleman in the Wesleyan Church, Riglan, in which a good congregation had assembled, Mr Gittos' services being at all times much appreciated both by Em-opeaus and natives in the Raglan district. An excellent sermon was delivered, in which the rev. gentleman spoke of some of tho great problems of life.
Tk Akau.— The largo drainage contracts at which Messrs Galvin and Co., have been engaged during the last fow months are now completed and will drain a lame area ot good land mailable for grass. With other contracts let to the natives in an adjoining swamp, the drains are'about six miles in length, emptying themselves into the sea. Grass sowing is still going on, ami will continue for some time yet. As yet there are no further bush falling contracts let, although it was stated that further operations in this direction would be undertaken, but nothing is known of it here yet. Would that it were so for thera is no doubt of the great benefit received in this district from the large sums that have been spent in the various contracts on this station of late years. Wkathek.—On Saturday night heavy rain fell, and again on Sunday night it came down in large quantities. To the farmers the rain was most welcome and the grass seed is now springing up fast. The weather cleared yesterday, and is now much colder. . S.S. Glenelg— This steamer arrived here from Wanganui and the south conveying from hence a large number of passengers for Onehnnga, etc., she came in again on Friday last having a large quantity of goods on both occasions. Amongst her passengers for Wanganui were tha Rev. Mr Garland and family who is now stationed in that district. She took from here on her trip to Onehunga a large quantity of flax, etc.
