A NARROW ESCAPE.
A GUARD'S NEGLIGENCE. (BY TELEGRAPA —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Ashburton', Last Night. An alarming accident occurred at the South Rakaia bridge last night about midnight, Two men were driving across the bridge in a buggy with a led horse behind, when the stock train came on the bridge. The men had no time to retreat and signal to the driver of the train, and were only able to pull to the side of the bridge when the train dashed into the vehicle, smashing it to matchwood. The engine cut off one leg of the buggy horse, and seriously injured the other, which was a valuablo trotter returning from the Ellesmere races. Both men escaped unhurt. There was a dense fog at the time, but tho regulation providing thnt the guard shall precede thn train to see that all was clear was disregarded.
