FALSE IMPRESSIONS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —There is a pood old English proverb to this effect—"One story is good till the other is told." In your issue of March 22nd, under the heading of " Occasional Notes, ' you publish certain false statements, which appear to have been copied from The Australasian, concerning a son of mine, now in Sydney. The " par " in your paper commences : " A Mr Rae (member for Was;ga in the New South Wales Parliament) " etc. I need not occupy your space by further quoting tho matter with which your readers are already acquainted ; but I trust, that in the spirit of fair play you will permit me to show the other side of the picture, so that I may correct the false impression which the slander you unwittingly circulated is calculated to produce. In the first place. Mr Arthur Rae is not " member for Wagga." There is no such seat in the New Smith Wales Parliament, Mr Rae is one of three members representing the electural dietriot of Murrumbidgee. He was returned at the last geiier.il election, with a majority of more than 400 votes over Mr Dibbs, the present Premier, who is one of the other members for the district. Wagga is one of the four principal towns in the district of Murrumhidgoe, and was, and still is the hotbed of New South Wales Toryism, and is a perfect nest of squatters and their hangerson. The two hundred persons who constituted the meeting referred to, were with some two or three exceptions tho men who had bitterly opposed my son's election ; consequently they eagerly seized upon the first opportunity to vent their spleen and to produce if possible false impressions upon the public mind. But they miserably failed. A meeting of three thousand men in the Sydney Domain passed unanimously a vote of approval of Mr Rae's action and of continued confidence in him as a representative of the people. A meeting of 4000 in Melbourne passed a vote of approval and numerous other meetings in all parts of Australia have endorsed his action. The person who has " come out wrong side up " is your contributor who has ventured to express opinions basod upon false premises. I do not wish to intrude upon your space, or I could furnish you with many proofs of Mr Arthur Rao's popularity. I would not have troubled you with this letter but for the fact that Arthur Rae is a native of New Zealand and has a /urge circle of friends and relative? in this colony. Thankiug you in anticipation.—l am, etc., Charles J. R\e. Sydenlnm, (Cmterbnrv) \la--cli 31, 1802.
