Haulage of Timber on the Thamwat — The late manager of the tramway write as follows, on M-irch 30lli : — Gentlemen, — I received a letter from your clerk, asking, for your information whether I had my fire-wood sent over your tramway for my private use during the time of my management, and I take the liberty to send the information direct in order that it may come before your meeting and in hopes that it will appear in The Waikato Timks newspaper. In answer to the information asked for I wish to state that I had some firewood sent down for my orivate use, and as the question will likely be asked why it has not been shown in the returns for haulage I will give you that information ; the reason is this : that it has been the custom, ever since the line was constructed, for the manager and meii wh , ) worked the line to have what wood they need themselves, sent down free of charge. If you will kindly refer back to the month of August in the year 188G, you will find that at that time the same matter was brought betore the Council, and in just the same way, namely, by a friend of the manager's finding a mare's nest and reporting it privately to the Council. I may further state that in Augguet 18SG, when I was shown over the line and installed as manager by tho then manager, Mr VV. L. C. Williams; he distinctly told me that the men were not to be charged for their wood, and his reason for doing so was owing to the matter having been brought before the Council ju?t predate, and as I had no instruction the mattar when I took charge of your lino on jjfchst occasion, I thought I could net than cirry out the work as I did previously, which then gave the Con« M great satisfaction, and I did so as far as it lay in my power, but the Council must not blame me for the manner in which the trucks were repaired, a< they were taken out of my hands all together.— Yours, etc., T.
