Tho Unionists of that province, including members of tin; House of Commons, in view of the oom : ng elccfciou, are arranging t~> hoM :i (."invention to protest against the severance of the Imperial connection. They declare they will take no share in an Irish Parliament, but will passively resist its laws and taxation, i They appeal to tteir fellow-country-men not to place tlietti at the incrcy of a Catholic majority. It is stated that tho Unionists will oppose the Irish Nationalist Party, in order to test whether there has been a change of feeling since 18S5. Tho Duke of Devonshire in tho llouso of Lords, insisted that the Unionists are more likely to bring practical reforms into operation than the Liberals. The latter wore pledged to a vague hope of Home Kule. Ho advised tho Unionists not to outbid them with promise? impossible of performance. April 2. Mr Balfour, in tho course of a speech, declared that the Conservatives vvoull win tho general election, because his party " were declaring dividends, while the Liberals wore issuing a prospectus."
The Conservative press endorse tho opinion that to enforce Home Rule would result in civil war in Ulster.
