CRUELTY TO A HORSE.

(BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, Last Night. A SALUTARY sentence was inflicted at the Police Court this morning by the presiding justices, Messrs Graham and Rees George, upon Arthur Carter, who pleaded guilty to illtreatment of a horse by working it while suffering from a sore shoulder. Mr Dufaur appeared on helialt nf tho Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, said that as their worships had inspected the animal they would be fully aware of the cruelty inflcted. The collar had actually worn itself through the skin and right into the flesh, and yet for morning after morning, the bad collar had been pub on tho creature. In this case it would bo useless for the Bench to inflict a tine as the man had gone bankrupt. Under the circumstances lie would ask that the sentence should be a term of imprisonment as this was a most deliberate piece of cruelty. Defendant when called stated he had nothing to say. The Bench said if the prisoner had gone bankrupt the sooner tho creditors took possession of the horse the better. Defendant had pleaded guilty to the charge and had nothing to say. He had rendered himself liable to a fine of £20, but as it seemed the defendant was a bankrupt it would be useless to indict a fine. There was however another resource open, and as this was a wanton and dastardly act they sentenced the prisoner to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour.
