FANCY DRESS BALL AT WHATAWHATA.

[ ♦ 3 Thk fancy dress ball organised by Mr Percy Meredith, came off upon Wednesday evening. The weather unfortunately turned out most unfavourable, and many who had purposed going, and in some cases, had even prepared fancy costumes for the oc-

casion were deterred by the wet evening, from venturing out. However, the ball went off successfully in spite of these drawbacks. Some of the ladies fancy dresses were very tasteful and pretty. The tollowing is a short list of the most noticeable among them :—Miss twerson (school teacher of 16th century), Miss Higginson (dude), Miss Swanson (Highland lassie), Miss F. Chalston (jockey). Among the married ladies, Mrs A. looked charming as (Carmine), from the Pirates of Penzance. The male costumes were generally appropriate, and in some cases very aniusine. The characters of clown and nigger, taken by Messrs Sullivan and Ragg, afforded somo real fuu, these young men being by no means bad acrobats. As (man o' wars' man), Mr Geo. Swanson looked every inch the jolly tar, and this was probably the best impersonated character in the room. Some others were Mr Bloomtield (jockey), Mr A. Livingston (footballer), Mr ■ Meredith (yachtsman), Messrs McCutcheon ' and Fergiismi appearing in ihe new military uniform of Wi-i Waikato Mounted Rifles. ' During the «>vning several good songs were rendered by Messrs Sullivan- and Ragg, ' dancing bcinv kept up until a late hour.
