Mrs. RACING.
TO THE EDITOR. I Sib,—While it is needless for me to com- ' ment upon the general rß gret felb on ( account of the unpropitious weather for the | racing at Ngaruawahia on Saturday, yet the meeting throughout was anything but what the stewards might be proud of. It i seemed as though a few horse owners had i everything " cut and dried " before hand. Of course, the public favourite won in nearly every case, for the simple reason thut nothing but a bare-faced swindle could prevent it, and this certainly was done in the running of the Ngaruawahia Plate, Snake, who could have won as he liked, being hard held all the way from the back of the course to within a few yards of the winning post, allowing Antic to win under the most severe punishment. On weighing in, the exchange of compliments between the respective owners sounded too plausible for the victimised investors on Snake, who at once lodged a protest. In fairness to one of the committee, Mr Smith, though an investor on the winner, expressed himself as being greatly dissatisfied with such deliberate swindling; or, as a prominent, member of Tattersall's put it: "No, Jack, he (the jockey) cenldn't help it; hut his reins were a bit too strong," plainly intimating what would have happened if the reins had broken. Surely it is time that sush a mockery of racing was put down at these country meetings. The starter was also greatly interfered with, and while getting the horses together for the Novel Kace, two others (I presume interested parties) stepped out and began hauling at one and posting another till the exasperated bona fide starter cried " off !" with half the field half a chain in front of the others. My advico to Mr Hinton is, the next time the club holds a meeting, take a stockwhip in preference to a flag.—l am, &c, ! Invesioe. '
