After the men had drawn for the target thoy were marched to thu firing point at 700 yards. The most interest was centred in Hie 9 and 10 targets. On the former, Purnell (who was a tie with Spiers) and Jones were firing; while on the latter Doughty was placed. Spiers was separated from these by several targets. All the leading division wer.? firing very consißtently, and when each had tired five shots the relative positions were Pnrnell 495 Doughty 493 Spiers 492, and Jones 491. With his last two shots Doughty brought up the white disc on each occasion, and he was the first to finish with 31, making a grand total of 500. Purnell had yet two shots to go, and with his aggregate at:)os,it looked a moral for him; but it was noticed that ho dwelt nt considerable length over his shots, aud this he explains by stating that he was unable to get a good sight. His ninth shot was an outer, and the result of his tenth was awaited with breathless excitement. When the disc was hoisted it was found that another outer had been scored, and that Doughty and he were ties. Purnell and Doughty than laid down to fire off the tie, in accordance with the rules, which provide that ties in the Championship shall be decided by firing five st.ots at 700 yards. Doughty scored 55222 (10), while Purnell only succeeded in registering 42212 (11). The former was declared the winner, and three cheers were given for him, which were followed by the Defence Minister calling for three cheers fur Purnell, and these were heartily responded to. Doughty was warmly congratulated or his victory, which was wMI deserved, as he fired very steadily throughout.
