CAMBRIDGE WEST.
Coffee Suppek.—A very enjoyable and social evening's entertainment was held in the Wesleyan Church at Cambridge West, on Thursday last. The entertainment was got up to r.iise funds to purchase prizes for the Sunday-school scholars, and it was of so successful a nature that a larger amount was netted than was required for the purpose. In addition to the entertainment, the ladies of the church provided a coffee supper that met with the approval of all ; and if any guarantee as to the quality of the viands is required, we must refer enquirers to the occupants of a. certain seat, where the sandwiches vanished in a most astonishing manner. Mr Richard Raynolds occupied the chair and apologised for the absence of the Rev. C. H. Garland, who was prevented from attending by indisposition. Tho programme was as follows :— Organ solo, Miss Nixon : song, " Only to see her face sftrain," Miss L. Roberts; zither solo, Miss Hooper (encored); recitation, "Quite another colour now," Mr W. Tuck. The chairman then delivered an address, after which Mr A. C. Hill gave a few pertinent hints on the training of the young. Miss Garland sane "Eileen Allannah," and then Louise Hill, a little child, recited "Do Thy Little." Mr J. Hooper sang a song the name of which we did not catch, and Mr H. R. Hvatt gave a reading on " Improvements in Science." Mr B. Garland delivered an oration in the Lancashire dialect (which by the way was as bad, or worse, than Maori to the majority of the audience) and then M» J. J. Bridgman gave "Biddy and the Postmistress." The entertainment was concluded by the singing of the National anthem, Miss Hooper playing the accompaniment upon the either. Many of the audience greatly regretted the absence of thp Rev. C. H. Garland, for he is a great favourite with the inhabitants of Cambridge West, and as his stay in the district is drawing to a close, they will not have many opportunities of hearing him again.
