GO-OPERATIVE RAILWAY WORKS.

During the past few days, says the Ohinemuri Gazette, Mr G. Fitzgerald, the resident engineer for the railway works, and Mr T. E. Shaw, his chief officer, have been making the final measurements and payments for work done on the formation. The number of men employed has varied from 200 to 230 ; the period of their employment has been five weeks, and the amount distributed about £1600. It will thus be seen that the average earnings of the men is about 30s per week. An increase has been granted from Scl per yard to lOd and ill special cases lid, the price of the peat still remaining at Bd, this being considered fair. Noue of the sections havo beftQ completed bathos. 13 and 24 (respectively the middle and Te Aroha end sections) will be finished a* the end of next week. At the same rate of progress the whole of the formation will be completed in about live months. Speaking of tho individual oarnings of the men, the lowest is a little under 5a per diem and in one instance a party have made 12* per diem per man. This latter will however not be repeated as the men employed on that particular section have picked the plums out of thoircakc and will not bo able to make the same measurement in future. The men are all loud in their praises of Mr ]''it7.corald who indeed deserves great kudos for his great tnct and good humour in handling the various parties. The system itself is an empirical one and ca-n only approach success by means of the officers handling it.
