MAORI RAGES AT KAPINGA

A very enjoyable day was spent by a few of us at the Knpinga, in the KingOintry, 12 or 14 milea from Kihikihi. Having heard that the natives of that part intended holding races there on 23rd inst., wb rode out to witness their sport. A line day and gnod driving road were in our favour. On our arrival at the Rate entrance to coune. we were rather surprised at seeing written up in both Maori and English, gates fees: 2s man and horse; 2s 6d vehicle. Wβ paid our money and cantered away to where we could see a gathering of both horses and people. They were just preparing for their first race. I may here mention that the energetic Secretary, Mr Downes, had everything in apple pie order. The programme had been passed by the A.R.C. consequently all the races were run strictly under their rules. There was a, large gathering of natives. The course was a pretty good une both for running and for viewing, a small hill answering the purpose of a grand stand, from the top of which we coald view thn horses from start to finish. The committee consisted wholly of natives with the exception of the Secretary, Mr Downes, who is a very popular halfcaste. There were six races as detailed below. During the intervals we were enabled to refresh ourselves with sandwiches, tea, lemonade and apples, Mrs Wickham haying a refreshment stall which was well patronised. The races over about halfpast five we stirted on nur way homeward arriving in Kihikihi about dusk. The following nre the results: — Hubdlb Rack. Distance, 2 miles. Prize,
