THE FAREWELL MEETING TO LORD AND LADY ONSLOW.
Thk above meeting, which is to take placo at Ellerslie to-day, promises to be very successful, should the weather prove favourable. The annual race meeting was held at Rotorua on Thursday, and was a most unqualified success, there being an attendance of about 700 people, which, of course, included a large number of Maoris; also a fair sprinkling fiom Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. Although there were so many present, there was not the slightest disturbance throughout the day, the police arrangements being perfect, and although Inspector Emerson had seven.il conbtabled in attendance, we believe their services were not once required. The totalizator was worked by Mr Adams, of Auckland, tho tickets being 10s. The officers of tho club worked well, and are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. The following is the list of the events, and the winners : — „ „„„ _ Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20sovs. Two miles. i Mr Lawson's Peter 1 i Mr Te Purewa's Mahurihuri 2 Mr C. Keeble's Charlie... ... ••• 3 ; Catch'em, Raiona and Ranana also ran. i After the fall of the flag Catch'em and Peter at once went to the front and the race quickly resolved itself into a duel between these two. Catch'em led over the i tirst hurdle, but Peter then took command and was never afterwards headed, however, Catch'em hung on to him closely and was going strong and well when hi? rider's near stirrup gave way, after the greater portion of • the distance had been traversed, and at the • next fence the horse nearly came to grief ) and lost a lot of ground, but his jockey r (Bird) quickly set him going again and the i finish would have been close, only Hurt fortunately Catch'em and his jockey came i to grass at the last fence. Fortunately • neither horse nor man were injured, i Catch'em completed the race hoping to got i second money, but tho judge gave his / decision as above. Dividend, 20s. j Maiden Plate. One mile. i Mr Lawson's Lady Marion 1 Mr W. Lemon's Arawa 2 Mr S. Moody's Nonsense 3 3 Eight started, This was a good race • Lady Marion winning by about half-a----1 length from Arawa, Dividend, 275. Jockey Club Handicap, of 30sovs. Two j miles. Mr S. Moody's Tiger 1 li Mr Hanuon's Haricot 2 e Mr W. Longan's Abraham T
Mr W. Ring's La Grippe + Seven went to the post. The start was ft bad one. a couple of horses being left at the post. Uncle Bob and Tiger went away at slashing pace, Haricot being third some distance behind; however the first mentioned soon had to give way to Haricot who got up to Tiger but could not pass him and this "little wonder" eventually won by about six lengths. The win was a most popular one with the Maoris, who seemed to have pinned their faith on Tiger. Maori Hack Race. Post entry. Distance, 1 mile. Mr Murray's Fisherman 1 Mr Whiti's Try Fluke ... _ 2 Mr Huhepa to Raki's Rainui ... ... 3 Six started. This was won in the commonest of canters, notwithstanding that Fisherman went away with a false start and compassed the course before his jockey could pull him up. Dividend, £1 6s. Handicap Pony Rack, of lOaovs. One mile. Mr L. Moody's Tiger 1 Mr L. Harris' Antic 2 Mr T. Connolly's Rakau .. 3 Seven started. These wont away to a beautiful start, Antic and Rakau being in the van; but about three furlongs from home Tiger took the lead, and although Antic did his best, he could not overhaul the black gelding, with the steadier of lOst lOlbs on his back. Again the Maoris were very demonstrative over the win. Dividend £1 Ha. Tourists' Plate, of 15sovs, One mile. Mr W. Lorigan's Abraham 1 Mr Hannon's Haricot 2 Mr Lawson's Lady Marion 3 Seven started. There was a long delay at the post, but eventually they were got away to a splendid start. Mr Lawson, on Lady Marion held premier place for half the jouruey, but then Abraham chipped in and passed him, as did also Haricot in the last two furlongs. Dividend, £2 15s. Haramai was a hot favourite with the Maoris, but he finished last. He certainly looked a likely winner, and was handled badly. His owner offered to run any of the horses that were in the race for £30, on the flat or over sticks. Selling Hack Race, of lOsovs. One mile. This was won by Mr Vercoe's Commodore, upon which a dividend of £4 17s was paid. The winner was sold for £12, Burton Handicap Stakes, of losovs. One and a-half miles. jlr G. Vercoe's May ... 1 Mr C. Roger's Turua ... - Mr L. Harris' Antic « Seven started. This was a well-contested race. Dividend 21s. This brought the day's sport to a close.
