The Taien River etnbankmmit has broken in two places., flooding the whole country. Crops are utterly ruined, and sheep and c:ittle are perishing by drowning. Bouts are rescuing people from submerged houses. A dam erected :it Otaikaia has broken down, flooding the small villages. Settlers are engaged di'ivinc their remaining live stock to the hiijh lands for safety. No loss of human life has occurred yet, out household gjods are afloat in the river. Oamaru, Last Niptht. Details of the damages caused by the floods are coming to hand. Thu first roan tlirougli from Kumw reports terrible ravages in thut district, tons of crain being t-ifistroyed. The bridtfos at Wharekare, Awnkino, Otiate and Otekaike are down, as well as those at Kumw and Duntroon. Railways were badly damaged, and many farms submerged. The Maerewhenua is still rising. At dark last night several settlers had narrow escapes from drowning, and were rescued from their homes by ropes. The weather is now fine, with a brisk breeze.
