ROTORUA.
Fire. —The school master's house, the property of the Education Department, was burned to the ground on Saturday evening last, about 10 o'clock. The building was quite new having been erected about twelve months ago, at a cost of £315. The fire originated in an outhouse where some embers from the kitchen fireplace had been put away by the occupant, Mr Webber early in the evening previous to his going out, so that there was no one in the house when the fire commenced. The early stages of it, however, were seen by Messrs Bussy and Croker who quickly appeared upon the scene and used their best endeavours to extinguish the flames but without success, there being no water at hand, or at least procurable although the water tap was running, it was unapproachable on account of the heat. Efforts .vera then directed to save the furniture and effects, most of which were carried outside and carefully stowed away out of danger, so that there was very little lost except the building. Some of the doors were wrenched off and the fence pulled down, and saved from being destroyed. Considerable praise is due to Messrs Bussy and Croker to whose exertions is due the saving ef the furniture, the loss of which would no doubt have fallen heavily upon Mr Webber. Rotorda RaoES.—A slight error has occurred in the telegraphic report of the weights for the Rotorua Handicap Cup event, Haricot and Abraham are etated to have 9st 31bs and Bst4lbs respectively when it should be Haricot 9st 71bs and Abraham Bst 21bs. This correction may be of interest to the horseowners. The handicapping of Messrs Carr and Stanley is favourably commented upon. It will be interesting to witness the struggle between Haricot and Tiger both of which ran first and second respectively for the Cup last year and are again entered with weights fairly adjusted for the coming event. The acceptances and general entrances take place on the 11th inst.
