RAGLAN.
Picnic—On Friday last, January 29fch, the annual picnic took place at Te Akau, just below the residence of the manager (Mr Mathias), in one of those pretty bays, known as Money Gold Bay, and just opposite the township. Shortly after 10 a.m., between sixty and seventy settlers had assembled at the old wharf, and were soon on board the Rangitara, belonging to Mr Rendell, who had kindly lent it tor the occasion, Captain Vercoe being in command. Sail being hoisted and oars put out, we soon sped across the harbour and into the romantic bay, guarded on both sides by massive rocks, in which, perhaps, " rural fays and fairies dwell." After some little delay, all were ashore, provisions, etc., landed and conveyed beside a cool clear stream, boilers filled, and fires lighted ; and soon a spread was made and the good things provided partaken of with the cheering cup of tea. After a rest, a suitable place having been found, games of all kinds were indulged in, both old and young joining in the sport. Mr La Trobe during the afternoon took a photograph of those present, and then the call for tea came, to which full justice was done. In due time all were homeward bound. Another view having been taken of the groiip assembled, all were soon on board, after spening a most enjoyable day in one of the many of Raglan's beautiful spots. Ministerial Visit.—The Rev. Mr Calder paid a visit to the Raglan District, reaching here the latter part of last week. Mr Hasleden was expected, but, beine unable to visit us, Mr Calder kindly took his place. .Services were held by the rev. gentleman on Sunday—at Ruapuke in the morning, Te MaU in the afternoon, and at the Church of England, Raglan, in the evening, the little church being well filled, every seat being occupied. A practical sermon was given, showing the nature and character of " A True Gentleman," not only in relation to his God, but also in his dealings with his fellow-men in all the transactions of his daily life. The discourse was well illustrated by many examples, bearing upon the subject in hand.
