A Maori girl named Keriana Hayes, aged 16, committed suicide by hangintr, because of the opposition of her guardians to certain love all'airs. She placed her head in a noose only three feet above the ground, aud theu wont on her knees and after a determined struggle succeeded in strangling herself. Severe storms from the south-east, have been raging here siuce Thursday. Much rain has fallen, and if the bad weather continues the country will be RUSSELL, Last Night. A large steam trader has been purchased hf London, by Mr William Smith, fish dealer, of Wellington and Christchurch, to develope the fisheries north of Auckland. MASTERTON, Last Night, Sergfc. Bernard Diamond, V.C., late of thc°Royal Horse Artillery, died yesterday, at the age of 60. Deceased Hcrveil twenty-one years in Her Majesty s service, nineteen of which were spent in India. He was in possession of the V.C., Puujaub Medal, Indian War Modal and Good Conduct Medal. He was accorded a military funeral. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. There is magnificent weather and an abuxdant and early harvest is promised. The Governor visited Riverton this morning and lett the Bluff this afternoon in the Hinenioa, for the Sounds, accompanied by Countesses of Onslow, Jersey and Galway. George Fearn, aged six years, while chasing a horse yesterday, was kicked on the head, sustaining a compound fracture of the skull, and died in the Hospital, at noon, to-dav.
