THE WOOL TRADE IN THE UNITED STATES.
By late American advices we learn that quietness prevails in the Boston, New York and Philadelphia!! wool markets. Manufacturers, as a rale, were reputed t > have light stocks on hand, but the belief in lower prices to come prevented activity. In Australian wools some moderate sales have been effected at fair price?. Tlio market for choice wools remained steady, but defective wools were difficult of eale The Australian staple >vas meeting with increased demand, and taking into account that much larger quantities of such wool would be required in future, existing and prospective stocks were only of fair size. Regarding the future of the wool market, tho Ama'.ican Wool and Cotton Reporter says :—" A careful diagnosis of the situation at the present time would seem to lead to the conclusion that with an improved demand from manufacturers supplies may be worked up sufficiently to prevent any further depreciation in values. Few, if any, holders of wool are looking for any radical appreciation in values from their present level, in spite of the confident assertions of the fol lowers of ' JMcKinley, , and so far no benefits have been conferred on the domestic woolizDwer by the higher tariff, prices bavin"- gradually cased month by month ever amen tho actual passago of tho McKinley Act."
