The excess of births over deaths was 780, but the births enow an increaHe of only 18 on the previous year. In consequence of a statement that the labour bureau had thrown so many people on the benevolent trustees as t<> be the principal cause of the overdraft, amounting to £500 or £600, Mr Tregear wrote asking for particulars with the accoant of the expense incurred. The chairman declined tu overhaul the books out of curiosity but said he would furnish the details if the Government wanted to payback the money and would keep the names secret. The trustee* agreed that the names should not be divulged, and the chairman cited to the board a number of cases where the trustees had to support wives of men on the Pahiatua relief works.
