AN ELECTION IN THE UNITED STATES.
The following gives some idea of the vigorous electioneering canvass in Ohio, which w*s recently carried to a victorious issue by Major McKinley, of prohibitive tariff fame :—" Attended by a corps of electioneering veterans. Major McKinley is travelling constantly through the States with a special train, and makes several speeches every day. Great crowds are attracted together by all sorts of spectacular and material devices—glittering parades by day and torch-light processions by uight, bands of music by the dozen, free railroad tickets, and, in some cases, it is alleged, free beer, and free collations besides. Many thousands of dollars are thus spent each week to keep the excitement up to a white-hot glow, and the manufacturers of the entire country assess themselves to replenish the party treasury. If nionpy ran carry the day, the unjor will ceitiinlv vin, and the only question is, how u vie!"ry obtained by such means will be regarded by thfl cmintrv nt large."
