AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING.
Fully six thousand visitors attended the Auckland Racing Club's Summar Meotinir at Ellorslic, on Saturdnj', and over £10.000 was put through the totalisator. Tlie great event of the day, the Auckland Out), Ml t,o the lot of Mr Walter's Pinfire who with his Btabla companion, Leorina, started a« rank outsiders, paying a dividend of £17 14*. Mr Morrin's mare, Hilda, was aerved up an a very hot favourite, but could only run into fourth position. Our old friend Rue landpd the double— Ffandicap Hurdle and Maiden Steeplechase —each valued at £100, with Lonoly and Colonel, respectively—a piece of good fortune that will be received by his Waikato admirers with much pleasure, after his plucky hit of horsemanship at the late South Auckland Racing Club's meeting. Major George waa fairly successful, and anyone backing his horses on the machine throughout would have come out to the good, as Fiesole, in the Christmas Handir/ip, paid the respectable dividend of £13 fls. Hilda was the first to move, with Fraternitb and Queen of Trumps immeliately iu her wake, but they had travelled only a few ttridos when Piufire shot to the fpont, Hilda at tho same time falling back into fourth place. Having led the way into the cutting. Pinfire at that point had two lengths lead of his stable mate Leorina, after whicn came Queen of Trumps and Coalscuttle, while Fraternity and The Dreamer were racing side bv side next, Hilda, whipping in the field. At the turn into the straight Pinfire was still bounding alone in front of hi. J field at a great rate, Coalscattte being his most immediate attendant, but when they had reached the stand Leorina had gaine'l sccond place, a length behind Pintire; then, a'ter an interval of three Icncths. came Coalscuttle and the Drpirnrr, with Kr.iterni!o next, anil Hild i .--till To tho surprise of those who watoMog t ! ie race Pinfiro gave no signs of compounding, anil as they left the six-furlong post behind them he was attll travelling as if ha rasant
to run nil day, whilst, on the olhnr hand, Gallagher at this point in vain endeavoured to improve. Hilda's position, theinure being apparently unalile to make up her ground. When the horses ran out of the cutting (Juecn of Trumps was in second place, two lengths behind Pinfire ; while two lengths further off came Leorina, Fraternitf 1 next, making a. forward move, and Coalscuttle and Hilda in last places, Pinfire was first to reach the straight, with Fratorniti-, who had coino very quickly from tho halfmile post, second ; but once their heads were turnod for home the I'auphin li.tso yielded, and fell back be.iten. In tho meantime Coalscuttle, who had boon stfou to he coming with a fast run, had so rapidly assumed prominence that at tho Derby stand she had passed everything but Pinfire : and it then looked as if the bearer of tho " rose and white stripes " would also have to yield before her determined rush, but Pinfire, answering at once to a most resolute call, strode away and won by a length from Coa'scut tie. who was a length and a-half in front of The Dreamer, after whom cu.ine Fiatemitc, Hilda, Queen of Trumps, and Lcoritu in the order in which th -y are named.
