SPORTS AT HAMILTON. run usual sports at Humilton worn held m Sydney Square on Boxing-Day, ami in dvery way were a great succes-s, aod the committee have every reason to he promi of their efforts. There was a large attendance of the public, over 1000 person* being present (luring the afternoon. Large; numbers attended from the surro onditig townships, notwithstanding counter junctions in many of them. The weatli ur was all that could be desired, a cool breeze tempering the mid-summer's sun. The new pavilion was not patronised to the extent expected, the charge of Is being considered too high. Perhaps it woi&ld be as well to lower the charge in future, as it is a pity if the stand were to become a "white elephant," Tho Hamilton Brass Bund, under Mr(!. P. Mettara, were present during the day, and many were attracted by the excellent music provided. A refreshmout booth was provided by Mr II Mahon, who seemed to be doing aroaring trade, and Mr J. T. Home, with his ice creams, was unable to supply the wants of his numerous customers. Mr T. Buxton, at the Royal Hotel, across the way, supplied refreshments of every kind, and was woll patronised. T!io otiicars and committee worked hard, and it is no doubt mainly due to their that so erreat a success was attained. Mr C. J. \V. Bartou made an efficient secretary, being here, there and everywhere attending to the wauts of everyone, and keeping everything in order. The other offices were filled as follows: —Jtidce, Mr 15. P. Bayly: starter, Mr \i. .T. Pearson : handicappers, Messrs G. .1. \V. Burton a'ad T. (I. Sandes. These latter gentleman a.rn to bo especially complimented on the excellent, way tljey compiled the handicaps, llio results in the various events showing that; the ican liad been well brough'. together. Tlie principal event of the day was the Hamilton Cup, run in three staples, viz., 100 yds., 220vd*. and 440 yds., and scored by points'. The wiunor turned u)r in Mr W. H. Parr, a Hamilton Jad, wli») surprised everyone by his bailie runninj?. In the first two stages ho rail sccond! to K. Walker, but managed to win the third stage, Walker being third. This made the points even —sevon each —and it was decided to run off at the micld'w distance—L'2o yards. Walker, who w.is conceding I'arr ten yard* in this distance, rail up to him very quickly but Parr jrew away at once and won easily amid prolonged cheering. The Maiden was also won by Parr after a good race, Te Awarutu being second abi»ut haif a yard behind. W. Bishop, a Maori, won the hurdles (easily from a Held ofuight. Tho half mila and mile were won easily by Smith, who hails fi iiiii liaalun, and who was recnivin g 45 yards and 50 yards respectively. H. Hyde, tho scratch man in these two events ran splendid races, receiving second place <oaeh time. The tilting in the ring attracted a large field, tho winner being Mr H, 15. Webster who rode a pony entered by G. McCullagh. Maid won the trotting race, which was run on the course inside the Square instead of on the road as formerly, The Rat being second and L ist Chamca third. A protest was ontored against The Rat as being entered as only 13 hands 2 inches in height, and another protest was entered against C. Martelli who was first in the cigar and umbrella race on the grouuds of his not having his oimir alight'and bis umbrella up when he finished. The protest will bo docided to-morrow evening. The following is a detailed account of the racing:— Maiden* Rack, 100 yds. Ist prize, 20s; 2nd, 5s. —W. H. Parr, 1: Te Awarutu, 2 ; G. Hyde, 3. G. Jack also started. Won by a about half-a-vard. Time 113-sth sees. Boys' Rack (under 10). 100 yards handicap. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss; 3rd, 2s Gd.— Tangiti, (i yards, 1; .J. Quick scratch, 2 ; Innes, 1 yard, 3. Sixteen ran. Tangiti won easily. Gnus' Rack (under 12), 100 yds. handicap, Ist prize, f>s; 2nd, 2s (id.—N. Aubrey, 1 ; Reed, 2; W. Wright, 3. About six started. Handicap Hukdlku, 250 yds. Over six hurdles 3ft. Gin. liiuh. Parr and Walker both won their respective heats, and Clarke ran third to Parr. The other men who started in the final heat were: Brady (3yds), Bishop (Svds), Brown (10yds), Te Awarutu (11yds), W.
