WAIKATO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A GEN'UBAr. meeting of the members of the Waikato Horticultural Society was held in The Waikato Times Building-!, yesterday. Present : Messrs L. O'Xuill, President, in the chair. T. Wells, C. Dar, A. Swarbrick, J. Parr, G. K'lgecumbi! and R. .T. Gwynno.
Ambntxhent or Rulks. —Rule 0 was amended by substituting October for January and November for Kohriiary with regard to the meetings in local districts and the general meeting for election of oilicers respectively. Statbmkni , .—The following balance sheet in connection with the show last year was road :—Receipts: Subscriptions, ±>21 ss; entrance fee*, £2 ISs; special prizes, £2J Ss Gil; door receipts and sale of catalogues, £2!) lsf)d. Total, £77 12s lid. Expenditure : Incidental expenses, £L 13 0d ; advertising and printing, £13 3s 0d ; hire of material, labour, etc., £9 IDs 10d; band. £5; sundries, £5 18s lid ; hire of hall, £3 15s ; hire of marquee, £1 15s 3j ; judges' expenses, £4 14s ; prize money, £29 Us 4d ; or. balance £2 Is 7d. Total, £77 12s lid. The balance sheet was adopted as read.
KtEcnoN' oi' Uffickss.—The election of orticei's was proceeded with as follows :— President, Mr L. O'Neill, vice-Presidents, W. Dey, Hamilton; J. Walton, Tβ Aw.tmutu; and T. Wells, Cambridge; Hon. Secretary, M, It. W. Dyer. Show, 18U2.— Mr R. W. Dyer proposed that the next, show be held in Cambridge, on 17th March 1892. Seconded by Sir George Edgecumbe and carried. PUOTKCTION OK NEW ZrAT,AKJ) FIIUIT Gkowkks.—Mr George Kdgcumto called attention to the petition appoaring in a late issue of The Waikato Times, from the Whansrerei Fruit • growers Association. Mr Wells said that if they wanted protection for fruit they should have protection altogother. He would be sorry to see a duty imposed on the Island fruit as it would kill a growing trade— practically barter—now springing up with tlie Islands and drive it to Sydney. It was stated that the figures given in the petition were considerable overdrawn at both ends. After soma 'discussion it was resolved that the members of the society do not see their way to subscribe to the petition, believing that the fruit industry has so much vitality in it that it will flourish without protection.
