LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
(UY TKLEGHAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington', Last Night. At an interview between the Premier and the president and secretary of the Trades Council, Mr Ballance stated that the Government were willing to set apart a block of land to be taken up by the labouring classes on the lines of "Gonaral" Booth's scheme.
This afternoon the Government steamer liinemoa returned from a five weeks cruise to the Southern lighthouses and island services. Captain Fairchild visited all the food depots on the outlying islands and found them intact. He erected boutsheds on the Auckland Islands, at Erebus, and Enderbvand at Port Ross ; painted and repaired two boat sheds at P rt Cartelv, and erected a shed and left a boat at the JJuunty Islands, where he was able to land for the first timo in several years. While at the Auckland Islands the body found lately at the northern harbour was exhumed, in order to ascertain whether it was at all likely to prove to be that of one of the crew of the K.ikanui as had been supposed. Enough was learned to show that there could ba nothing in this theory, as the bones were so much bleached that they must have lain on the b3ich for some 90 years. While at the Sounds it was ascertained that one of the prisoners had died a few days previously. In consequence of statements nmde by some of his fellowprisoners, imputing blame to certain olticials, Hon. Mr Buckley, Colonial Secretary, who was with the liinemoa, held an official enquiry, which, it is understood, resulted in the charges being disproved.
