LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN COKKESFOMDENT.) Auckland, Last Night. The City Returning Officer has received the nomination of Mr Crowther, the senior Councillor for tha office of Mayor for the ensuing year. The nomination was endorsed by Messrs Upton, the present Mayer, \V. Buchanan, Withy and Devon;. The nominations close at noon, on Monday next, but no others are expected, and Mr Crowther will most probably be elevated to the Mayoral chair without opposition.
This afternoon the Northern Company's stoamer, Waiotahi, returned from her maiden trip down to tha Bay of Plenty, bringing back a part load of maize ami sheep from Opotiki. Mr Ransom, manager, and a number of directors and shareholders returned by the steamer, and all express themselves well pleased with the new vessel, her carrying capacity, and her sea going qualities. They are confident that she will prove highly suitable f..r the Bay of Plenty cargo and passenger trade. Although a much larger boat than the old steamers, she did not experience the slightest difficulty in negotiating the Opotiki bar. Her draught when loaded proved oxactly in accordance with the original specifications. She drew five feet six inches on leaving Opotiki on the return trip, which she made in twenty-three hours, including a call at Tauranga, performed on a speed of about 'Jj- knots throughout. The Opotiki settlers are greatly pleased with the new steamer.
At the Board of Education meeting today, it was intimated t,iiut the following entries of candidates for the scholarship examinations in December lir.d been received : Auckland College and Grammar School, 11 males, (J females, total 17: Thame.i High School, 1 male, 4 female*, total 5; St. John's College, Tamaki, 1 male; Ponsonby College, 1 female. For the junior the entries are : Oluss B (schools over 300 average attendance), 41 males, 23 females, total 07; Class C (schools between 100 and 300), 17 males, 10 females t0ta1,33 ; Class D(schools under]oo),o males, S females, total 14. Totals: 07 males, 47 females, grand total 114. The centres of examination are:—Auckland, 50 males, 37 females; total, 87; Thames, 17 males, G females ; total, 23 ; Hamilton, ,1 females ; grand total, 114. The number of entries from the different schools for the junior scholarships were as under :— Class B, Wellesley - street, 1"> ; Bercsfordstreet, 8; Napier-street, 1; Nelson-street, 1 ; Devonport, 4; Newton East, (i; Newton West, (i; Ponsonby, 1; Mount Eden, (J; Onelmnga, 11; Thames Kanaeranga Boys, 8. Class C : Newmarket, 2 j Remuera, 3 ; Avondale, 1 ; Otahulm, 1; Pukeknhe West, 4 ; Kawakawa, 2 ; Thames Kauaeranga Girls, 4 ; Parawai, 3 ; Tararu, 2 ; Waiotahi Creek, 2 ; Te Aroha 1 ; Hamilton West, S, Class D : lipsom, 3 ; Mangere, 2; Mercer, 0; Pakuranga, 1; Papatoitui. 1; Hikutaia, 1; Turua, 2 ; Hamilton East, 1.
At Mr Vailes's land sale to-day, a farm of 71 acres at Papakura, all in cultivation together with a large orchard and a sevenroomed dwelling house and out-buildings was sold for £400.
