SPORTS AT HAMILTON.
SPORTS in aid of the funds of the Hamilton Public Library were held on Sydney Square yesterday afternoon, and passed off very satisfactorily. For some little time the attendance was small, but as the afternoon drew on it increased, there being about 300 on the ground altogether. The weather held up nicely, and the track was in fair condition, but the grass was rather long and in some parts there wero nasty holes, one of which caused Cowling to fall, throwing liirn out of the Sheffield Handicap in the first heat. The big event was the Sheffield Handicap. This was secured by W. Mooro, who beat G. Hyde in the run off »fter fighting out a dead heat with Inn in the filial contest in the handicap a short time before. A protest was entered against Moore for not having given in his performance with his entry and the consideration of the matter was deferred for further information. Throughout the afternoon the Hamilton Brass Hand under Handmaster Mettam performed various selections in a most creditable manner, adding much to the enjoyment of those present. The various officers fulfilled their duties very satisfactorily. The following are the detailed results of the racing : —
