POTATO-GROWING.

The present disastrous season for potatogrowers throughout the colony is likely to cause a considerable decrease in the area put under that crop. Potatoes are, owing to tho amount of hand labour required, rather an expensive crop to erow, and between uncertain seasons and still more uncertain markets, farmers are likoly to devote more attention other branchps of thoir business, such as grain - growing, dniryine and sheep-broedinj. From tho Oamaru district, which has always been famous for the production of immense quantities of potatoes, we loam that there is expected to be a considorablu falling off in the extent of the area under potatoes this year. Usually between 3000 »nd 4000 acres are planted, but this seasou the area is not expected to exceed 1500 acres.
