RETAIL COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Slit.—With your permission I will make a general reply. Drapery of all kinds has been obtainable in Cambridge, and I believe elsewhere in Waikato, at and under Auckland prices. Is it lair to moil who hold stocks, pay rent (or an equivalent), rates, wages, msnrance, etc., to have to compote against men who hawk patterns about ? Which is best for Waikato generally ? Again, in the matter of subscriptions to races, sports, churches, etc., where does the support come from ? As regards produce, local storekeepers are expected to take that, and are told that if they cannot no bu-ioess can be done, while the same people find cash for travellers from Auckland. Taking it all round, produce is a serious loss to storekeepers. Ladies would, I am sure, find that goods purchased from the piece are much more satisfactory than from patterns, and while I admit that formerly there was some excuso for sending away for goods, it does not exist now. Iu conclusion, I trust, in f.iirness to local people, that if no law at present exists whereby a tax may be levied on hawkers, I hat an Act may soon be passed making it law. —I am, etc., On-Lookeh.
