It was a wretchedly bad start, St. Albans being left at the post. Stromboli jumped off with the lead from Yarran, with the favourite and Penance lying next. Passing the stand for the tirst timo Penance was showing the way to Strathmore and Stromboli ; but rounding the torn Yarran went to the head of affairs, after whom came Strathmore, Albemarle, Penance, Oxide, and Swordbearer in that order. Along tho river stretch Albemarle made play and took tho Held along at a very merry pace, with Strathmore leading the others ; and tlm order was Tho R'?bal and Oxide, with Yarran, Stromboli and Penance next, and Shvordbearer and St. Albans last. At the bridge, Albeinnrlo was four or five lengths ahead of The Rebel, then came Strathmore, Oxide, Yarran, Stromboli, Penanco and Swordbearor. Albemarle still lett the field further behind as they ran along tho back, being eight lengths in front of Tho Rebel, who was three lengths clear of Sirathmore, with Stromboli, Oxide, "Penance and Sternchaser in that order. At the abattoirs Albemarle was a dozen lengths in front of Tho Rebel, this pair having as their close attendants Strathmore, Stromboli, Oxide, Penance, Yarran and Sternchaser. Albomar'e. still hold seven lengths lead at the bend, with the favourite next, and the latter was striding along in advance of the others, next to him being Oxide and Tho Rebel. Entering tho straight Albemarle took tho inside running, with Strathmore, Oxide, and Stromboli racing in a bunch, aud Penance on the outside looked dangerous. At the distance Strathmore had everything settled, and passed the post an easy winner by a length and a quarter from Stromboli, Oxide nearly four lengths behind third. Albemarle was fourth, then came Sternchaser, The Rebel, and Yarran. Time, 2m. 41^3.

NEW ZEALAND CCJP,
Auckland, Last Night. In this evening's Star Hippona writes : — Tomorrow the race for the Melbourne Cup takes placo at Flemington. Strathmore's running in the Derby on Saturday points conclusively that the colt will have an uncommonly good chance of winning the great event. Among the elder division the chancos of Pigeontoe and Whimbere! are entitled to respect. Strathmore's Derby victory raises his Cup weight to 7st Gib, and Pigeontoe's weight has been increased to 7st by his winning the Hotham Handicap. ______

This is now being carried out, and there is every prospect of a substantial sum being collected. The following gentlemen have consented to act on the committee :—Messrs Robt. Bruce, 15. M. Dickey, F, W. Lang, W. W. Higginson.H. Meredith, James Charlston, W. McOutcheon, Geo. Swanson, C. Limmer, A. G'alder, lion, secretary.
