IE AWAMUTU.

Valedictory.—lt is merely to re-echo the feelings of the whole district when one expresses regret at the announcement that the Rev. and Mrs Macdonald are about to leave Te Awamutu. They will be greatly missed, for the way they laboured throughout the district, irrespective of creed, colour or class, and their unobtrusive kindness to all, made them universal favourites. As Mr Macdonald was president of the Band of Hope, the latter gave him a farewell social last Tuesday eveningin the Wesleyan chapel, and a very good programing was carried out, consisting of songs and recitations by the members. During the evening Mr Macdonald vacated the chair, which was taken by Mr Millar, who called upon their worthy secretary, Mr Samuel Holloway, to perforin the real business of the evening, Mr Holloway then, in a ueit speech, presented Mr Macdonald with on illuminated address from the Band of Hone. The address was neatly engrossed in old English text, and was very artistically framed, the whole being the work of Mr Howard, and shows what local talent can do. Mr .Macdonald replied, thanking them for their kindness. At the closa of the programme light refreshments were handed round by the choir. The address was as: follows :—To the Rev, J. Macdonald.— Dear Sir, —We learn with much regret that it is your intention shortly to leave our district, but we cannot allow you to go without expressing our high estimation of you as a Christian gentleman and as a hearty supporter of the temperance cause, We highly appreciate the faithful services you have rendered as president of our society, and only regret that we shall be deprived of your wise counsel and valuable assistance in the future, feeling sure that wheresoever your lot may be cast the temperance cause will have a true friend and hearty supporter. Wo also take this opportunity nf tendering our sincere thanks to Mrs Macdonald for her untiring zeal and Christian work in the district. Praying that Ihe Divine blessing may rest on both ol you, 011 behalf of the Band of Hope.— ■S. HqllO'iVAY, Secretary.

Road Caving in.—A .small excitement wan caused in the township one evening la»:t week by part of tho main road caving in. A large crowd quickly gathmed round tho subsidence in the roadway, which revealed the fact thrtfc thttie way a largo cavern underneath the crest thus broken. The old inhabitants were eagerly questioned as to whether they could account m any way for this nndermminir, but none of them seemed capable of throwing any light upon the matter. One prominent citiznn mildly suggested that it was where Rewi buried his treasure. A momentary gleam of brightness lit np the eyes of thn bystanders at this idea ; but our Maori linguist quietly sat on it (the ide;i, not the hole), and «o it will remain one of the many unsolved questions. The Town Board, with that promptitude that always distinguishes them, had the cavern filled up there and then, thinking that leaving tho place open for treasure-hnnters would not compensate for the claims for damages from broken legs.
