A MEKTlxri of tho Cabinet was helil this aftoruoou to consider the political situation, and although nothing has been officially announced, it is understood that Sir Henry Parkos has intimated his intention of resigning the Premiership, and also hi-; seat as member for the constituency of St. Leonards. On the motion for tho third reading of the Coal Mines Bill, which legalises the eight hours limitation of lab.nir, Mr McMillan, formerly treasurer in the present Ministry, moved its recommittal, opposing legislation on tin) eight hours system for one class of the community aud not for auother.
Sir H. Parkes disclaimed any responsibility for inserting the clause which, the Minister of Mines bad assented to while hu was absent from tho House through illness. He opposed the fixing of the hours of labour; legislation en the subject was not wanted as the working man was sufficiently powerful to make good his will in the matter without the aid of Parliament, be would retire from office rather than assent to the clause.
Mr Barron moved an adjournment of the debate and tho Premier as sorted, if tho motion was not carried, Government would not proceed with tho Bill. They would not submit to a refusal to adjourn. Evcncually the adjournment was negatived by 4!) to 40. Si v 11. Piirkos said that iu view of his previous statement ho had no alternative but to ask the House to adjourn which was carried amidst considerable excitement.
