SPORTING.

WAIKATO HUNT CLUB'S EACES,

Tub annual raco meeting in connection with the Waikato Hunt Club was held on the Claudelands racecourse, Hamilton, on Saturday, and was in every way a pronounced success, tho weather was perfect, the heat being nicely tempered bv a cool breeze, the course was in splendid condition, ami tho racing throughout was good, there being no serious accidents to mar tho day's enjoyment. There was a large attendance of the public, about SOO being present during the day, and among them a large number of ladies, who seemed to take additional interest in tho locally-owned horses, and were very enthusiastic over the representatives from their own localities. The Hon. John Bryco and Mr ! ( . Lawry, M.H.R., were both present during the afternoon. The arrangements made by Mr A. J. Storey, the active aud popular lion, secretary to the club, were perfect, and everything passed off without a hitch. The various olhcers as under performed their many duties in a way that gavo every satisfaction as well to the horse owners and jockeys as to tho general public : Judge, Mr L. Cusson ; starter. Mr C. J. Storey ; clerk of scales, Mr C. Tuck ; handicapners, Messrs Bach and Dalgloish ; clerk of the course, Mr E. H, Pilling. Tim handicappers and starter deserve special mention, the efforts of tho_ former having been successful in giving the various events a very open character, and Mr Storey was never more successful with the flag, and that is saying a good deal. The totalisator, worked by Messrs Adams and Andrews throughout the day, was well patronisedfeut more money would have been put through had there been another hand at the machine. £094 10s was pur, through during the day, the tickets being 10s, with the exception of tho Steenlechase when they were £1. Mr Oon. Edgecombe ofciatod as totalisator steward. There were no very largo dividends paid, the biggest being in the Flying Stakes when £1? Los was paid out. Considerable, discussion ensued, and in.-.ny questions were asked at first, as tho dividends were not paid on the 10 per cent, scale ; but the majority of the p iblic seemed to forget that the present (iovcrnment had seen lit to impose a tax of I.V tier cent on the gross amount put through tile totalisator?, and which tax came into operation on the Ist of the month. The privilege of every Briton was exercised to its fullest extent, and many were the blessings which were cast at the Government for their paternal legislation. The Racing Clubs do not lose anything under the tax, the I.',- per cent, beiag deducted, in addition to the usual 10 per cent, as formerly. During tho day the Hamilton Brass Band (Bandmaster Mettam) played selections tilling in the intervals between the events in a very pleasant manner. The wants of tho inner man were supplied by Mr T. Buxton, Royal Hotel, at tho publican's booth, and Mrs T. M. Hill at the temperance booth and luncheon room, and all seemed to be well patronised. A small complement of the book-making fraternity, including two or three local pencillers, wera present, and appeared to be doing a fair business. Four members of the police force were present during the day, but they were not required, the utmost good order prevailing throughout tho

meeting. Seven events were set down for discussion on the card, the ball being opened with the Haudicip Hurdles. This was looked upon as a, moral for Never Mis--, who went to the front at one;-, and led until the last hurdle, when ho emu down, and Mangere, who was also well supported, cantered in an easy winner, Crazy Kate being second. Helen Macgregir appropriated 'hn Maiden in rather an easy stvlo. Sin: started in the big Steeples, but only two finished, SciHheon winning in ;•„ very easy manner. Never Miss showed himself a good 'on by winning the Ladies' Bracelet and Flying Stakes, beating in the latter Tupara and Helen Macgregnr. Lupin went, away in the Farmers' Plato, anil was never caught. The Tally-ho Steeples, which had only four starters, was the race of the day. The suleoding riding of Mr A. J. Storey, on Crazy Kate, elicited rounds of applause. He was unseated at the water jump on the second round, but managed to recover his seat, and cleared tho wattle in front of the stand amid loud cheers. .Sailing away with an easy lead from Peter, the mare made a mistake, jumping out of tho course, and came down. Peter then got a lead of about 100 yards. Mr Storey was very quickly on his feet, and, mounting Kate, started after Peter, catching him at the hurdle at the end of the straight. A grand race ensued up the straight, Peter winning by about half a neck. Both riders receive! an ovation in the paddock. Mr W. Windsor was very successful in his riding; he rode in live races, three of which —the Steeplechase, Ladies' Bracelet, and Flying Stakes—he won. In the Farmers' Plato he was second, and in tho Hurdle Race his horse fell at the last hurdle when he was leading by several lengths. The other winner.-, were ridden aa follows:— Mangore, Mr G. Paul : Helen Macgregnr, I). Wright: Lupin, Mr G. McGlashan ; and Peter, Mr S. .Liwson.
