CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The above Council met in tho Council Chambers on Tuesday, at t p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor (J. H. Priestley), Cm. J. Webber, J. Robinson, J. S. Bond, A. Bach, and J. Hally. The minutes of tho previous meeting were read and confirmed. Licensing Clerk. —By instruction of the Council the clerk had written to various local bodies asking what salary was paid to the Licensing Clerk of their districts. The town clerks of Devonport, Onehunga, and Birkenhead replied that the duties were performed by them, the salaries fur the numerous offices they filled being : Devonport, £120 ; Onehunga, £100 ; Birkenhead, not given.—The Mayor said it appeared from the tone of tho letters their own clerk could be also Licensing Clerk.—Cr. Hally said they could apply for such an appointment to be made, but the matter rested with the Justice Department, and for the present year tho matter was settlod.—Cr. Bond said iie had not altered his mind. Mr Kirk was a servant -jf the Justice Department, and it was a part of his duties.—Cr. Hally said, aa a mattor of fairness, he thought Mr Kirk should be paid for last year, but they could give notice not to pay him next; year.—lt wa» then resolved to pay Mr Kirk £3 3s for the past year.—Cr. Bond then moved that application be made for the town clerk to be appointed Licensing Clerk, and that Mr Kirk be informed of such application.—Seconded by Cr. Robinson and agreed to. Colonel FrasEß, M.U.R.—This gentleman wrote under date August 19th : I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 13th instant, enclosing copy of resoluti >n of the Aihburton County Council. 1 shall have great pleasure in supporting the resolution when it is brought before the House.—The resolution referred to was asking that local bodies might be enabled to borrow money from private individuals.- Letter received. Balance-sheet. —Mr John Parr, of Hamilton, wrote, asking the clerk to send him a copy af the borough balance-sheet.— It was resolved to let Mr Parr have a copy of the balance-shoet if he would depute somuone to copy it for him during office hours. Finance.—Overdraft on lltli August, £374 17s lid ; accounts paid during month, £29 18s ; amounts lodged during month, £35 15s ; account* to pass for payment, £12 (is 5d ; overdraft when accounts are paid, £381 7s -Id. Legal ani: Finance.—This committee reported that tlio special domain committee met in the ollice on tho 21sb ultimo (ajl members! being proseut), when it was unanimously roaolved that the town clerk be authorised t.i secure the services of Mr Bruakell to prepare specifications for tho survey of the new Thornton road and portion of L ike To Koutu reserve at a cost not exceeding "Is ; and, further, that Messrs Gwynnotb and .Stubbing be requested to give tenders for the proposed survey. It was also resolved that application be made to the Crown Lands Commissioners fur allotment No. MM, to be used as a gravel pit.—The report was approved and adopted. Public Hall.— I The Public Hall Committee met on the 31st ultimo, and they recommended resolutions for adoptiou : That Mr W. S. Evans' offer of £10 for the old piano be accepted ; that he be instructed to time the new piano, and have an inside cover fitted over the keys so as to keep off the dust. That two mats, at a cost of Os Gd each, ho purchased from Mr R. Simm, the scrapers to staud over for future consideration. That the use of Mr Chas. Roberts' shop lamp bo obtained for tho entertainment on the 18th September, with a view to the better lighting of the stage, and if fnnnd suitable, one of the samo description to be purchased and fitted up.—The Mayor siiid Mr Roberts had kindly volunteered the use of his lamp.—The report was approved and adopted. Dancino.—Nliss Mackey had applied to have the Public Hall for a further term of three months, but the old piano having been sold it became a question of charging for the new piano.—Cr. Hally thought a charge of £1 Is for this quarter should be made, but in future the charge should be more. He moved a motion to that effect which was carried. Gravelling.—The clerk was instructed to call for tenders for gravelling for the ensuing year. Surfaceman.— Tho surfaceman's time having expired he was reappointed on similar terms to last year. Public Hall Caretaker.— F. W. Bucklaud was reappoiutedcaretaker of the Public Hall. Rates.—The Clerk said the half-yearly balance was approaching and he should be glad to receive Councillors' rates, as other individuals usually asked if those in authority had paid before paying themsolves. A Phko.vdtion.—Cr. Bach moved that when tho Public Hall was lot to strangers, they should bo nsked to pay half tho foo at tho timo thny engaged tho 1 tall.—Cr. Bond seconded tho motion. —Cr. Hally opposed the motion.—After sorno discission tho motion was withdrawn. Government Paddock.—Cr. Bach drow attention to the bad state of the fence of thin paddock.—The ohairnian of the Works Committee undertook to see lo it.
